Nelson Farms is a diversified crop and livestock farm located in Northwest Iowa. Edward Nelson first came to Marcus, Iowa in 1918, purchasing his first farm. That farm was then superseded by Roy Nelson, then David Nelson, then Eric Nelson. Eric and Carol Nelson purchased a farm outside of Moville in 1996 and began raising their family there. The Moville location has since become the center of operations. Today Nelson Farms consists of three farm sites; the original homestead at Marcus, and farms near Moville and Pierson. Eric farms with his oldest son Mark and his third son John, who both returned to the farm after graduating from Iowa State University.
Nelson Farms consists of four main operations; cattle, grain, seed beans, and seed sales. Within the cattle sector the Nelsons have an established cow-calf system, a herd of bulls, they buy feeder calves and yearlings to finish as fat animals, as well as finishing any cattle not retained for the breeding part of the operation. Nelson Seed was first established by Roy Nelson in the middle 1960s when he began selling Trojan Hybrids. Today Eric continues to carry the torch selling seed for Hoegemeyer Seeds, a Corteva subsidiary.
